BACKGROUNDS

Crake was a Galt anomaly. The Galt family tree was undistinguished in that it was composed of several generations of completely unexceptional people from Five Fingers. Not that the Galts were destitute or dimwitted, just unremarkable. His father managed to woo an eleven riveter and of their union, Crake was born. When at the age of five, Crake dismantled and rebuilt a discarded mechanical clock to assist his mother in the kitchen, folks began to wonder if maybe this Galt was destined for something more than a mundane existence.

At age 16, Galt was a permanent fixture in the industrial and manufacturing section of Five Fingers and could be found tinkering with the many mechanical implements of the area, fixing and improving upon the design. He wasn’t always successful, his failures often created scenes that were related around town and pushed him to try harder in the future. While his aptitude for machinery and overall intelligence garnered him a modicum of respect, Crake found he was outcast among his peers since they could not follow in his footsteps. The few jealous ones ridiculed Crake, but most just shunned him and went about their mediocre lives. Crake soon began to find the company of machines more enjoyable than those of flesh and blood.

It came as no surprise when Crake achieved the rank of artificer and opened his own workshop. When he began to crank out practical and innovative contraptions for use in home and industry his business flourished and he became one of the youngest inductees to the International Capitalists of the Continent. With success came relative wealth and fame for not only his creations but also his shrewd business tactics and bargaining ability, despite a slightly misanthropic demeanor. While he might not have liked most of his fellow men, he had sympathy for them, especially the underprivileged. He saw mankind and society as yet another machine in need of repair. So when fire ravages the shops near Crake’s workshop, there is no wonder that he is one of the first on the scene and to offer his assistance to Anwen Pennent.
